MEET THE CREW – HAMBURG HAFENGEBURTSTAG – PART 2

MEET THE CREW – HAMBURG HAFENGEBURTSTAG – PART 2

Martin, 31

How long have you been onboard?

2 months – Havana to Hamburg

How much experience do you have sailing?

I’ve sailed on traditionally rigged sailing vessels since 2003 and I’ve been a professional seaman since 2017.  A total of 18,000 NM predominantly on tall ships.

What is your position onboard?

Deckhand

What is your motivation to sail with the AVONTUUR?

Spreading the word: sustainable transport does exist on our oceans!  Plus sailing on a cargo vessel propelled by the wind was my dream since I started sailing on tall ships 15 years ago.  It combines a wonderful profession with a just cause!

What has been your best experience onboard so far?

Unloading cargo in Bremen last year and singing shanties while hoisting 290 bags of coffee.  Then we loaded the coffee onto dollies to drive them to the warehouse by electric cargo bikes!  That and the sailing of course.

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

Officer/Master on a sailing vessel <500GT, preferably on a sailing cargo vessel!

Describe this trip in one sentence?

Both reasonable and a bit of madness as well:)

Marco, 30

Germany – Saxony

How did you come to this project?

It’s my internship for the university.  My father told me about this project and gave me the contact at TIMBERCOAST.

How long have you been onboard?

Guadeloupe to Hamburg.  4 months.

How much experience do you have sailing?

Zero – first time sailing.

What is your position onboard?

Shipmate – Videographer/Photographer

What is your motivation to sail with the AVONTUUR?

First time sailing experience – to make a documentary about this whole trip and capture as many shots as possible and also do an Atlantic crossing on a sailing vessel.

What has been your best experience onboard so far?

Loading the rum with the self-built raft in Guadeloupe and the stormy weather on the Atlantic.

Where do you see this TIMBERCOAST project in the next 5 years?

Grown to a constant project with more cargo then now.  More ships and more products!  This is just the beginning!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

As a docu-filmer/cinematographer – doing projects like this and telling stories of adventure and living the dream.

Describe this trip in one sentence?

One hell of a ride.

Lisa, 28

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Somewhere with a full license at sea.

Describe this trip in one sentence?

Feels like being lost in space and time with all the grey and blue all around!
